Diaz beats former MLB player Byrnes at Lake Tahoe area triathlonNick Diaz is about as unconventional as it gets in mixed martial arts. That includes training year round for triathlons in between all of his time at the gym.

Diaz is prepping for the biggest fight of his career, Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137 in October, but he's not curtailing any of his road work, cycling or swimming.

The former Strikeforce welterweight champ, who hasn't lost an MMA fight since 2007, finished an impressive 36th at the 30th Annual Donner Lake Triathlon.

Diaz also beat out former Oakland A's outfielder Eric Byrnes in the process. It took Diaz 2 hours, 46 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 0.9 mile swing, 24.8 mile bike ride and 6.5 mile run around Donner Lake.

"It keeps me in great shape. I'll be in great shape when I start training camp," Diaz told the North Tahoe Bonanza. "A lot of mixed martial arts guys who train only at one sport will fall short at some point in a fight, whereas an all-around good athlete can go further, in my opinion."

In April, Diaz was in Las Vegas for an Xterra race. He explained to Cagewriter's Maggie Hendricks why he races eight or nine times a year.

I just like to race. I like the open water swim. It gives me something to build for. During [triathlon] season, every two weeks, I'll race. In that training, I get stronger and stronger, building up to the race. After a race, a lot of people will crash, but I'll keep building up and building up until I have to fight. It gives me something to not crash after the race is over. I try to keep the ball rolling until I have a fight.

Dan Patrinellis posted a nice video recently of a run he took with the Davis brothers on the Potomac River when the level was around 3.5.  There’s a stellar boof at 1:05 (at least it looks that way to me – I notice those because most of my boofs leave me requiring scuba gear).  Also, to [...]

Ovince St. Preux hits the big stage in Las Vegas tomorrow night at Strikeforce Challengers 17. With 14 pro fights under his belt, he won't be nervous. It doesn't hurt either that he played football in front 100,000-plus during his days in the SEC at Tennessee.

OSP would love to get recruited to the UFC at some point in the future. If offered, it won't be a tough decision. It wasn't as easy when he was a star athlete in high school. All the big guns came after the 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker/defensive end prospect.

St. Preux joined ESPNRadio1100's DC and the Sunshine Man on Wednesday to talk about his fighting and football background. He said he chose Tennessee over schools like Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame and Clemson. The decision to turn down Bobby Bowden and FSU was made easier when OSP had a little incident go down at his job.

While St. Preux was working at a Burger King in the Immokalee, Fl. area, his boss got a call asking for the star athlete. The manager asked who was calling and thought it was a prank when the voice on the other end said, "it's Bobby Bowden." The BK boss hung up the phone. That wasn't really the make or break moment in St. Preux's recruitment, but it made for a memorable story. OSP went to have a productive career along sides the likes of Kevin Burnett, Erik Ainge, Robert Peace, Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs Jr.

Now he wants to be mentioned with names like Jon Jones, Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, Mauricio "Rua" Shogun and Lyoto Machida. OSP looks for his seventh straight win tomorrow night against Joe Cason in Las Vegas.

It's been almost two years since Dan Hardy won a fight, and after losing his third in a row in March, Hardy decided he was overdue for a change of scenery.

So Hardy, who had been accustomed to splitting training time between his home in Nottingham, England, and Los Angeles, decided that he'd make Las Vegas the home base for his training camp for his Aug. 14 fight with Chris Lytle. Hardy says the results will be easy to see when he steps into the Octagon.

"It's been really good -- it's my best training camp so far," Hardy said. "I've been working every day with Roy Nelson and I have my striking coach with me."

Hardy said he's still loyal to his friends at Team Rough House in England, but that there's no comparison between England and Vegas when it comes to looking for a wide variety of coaches and training partners.

"I've been traveling around to a few different gyms for sparring," Hardy said of his time in Las Vegas. "There's a lot of talent in Vegas. It's given me the opportunity to train with a few different guys and get a few different looks."

After beating Mike Swick in 2009 to earn a welterweight title shot, Hardy has stagnated: In fights with Georges St. Pierre, Carlos Condit and Anthony Johnson, Hardy didn't just lose but he was completely dominated. He said those losses didn't cost him any confidence but did cause him to consider whether he was improving as a fighter.

"It's a continuous process and something I need to work on for the rest of my career," he said. "I'm seeing improvement from myself and I'm hearing from other people that there's been a lot of improvement. ... Sometimes you just need to take yourself out of your comfort zone and I think I slipped into a little bit of a groove in L.A. and England."

Now Hardy says he's confident that training in Las Vegas is going to result in a career-changing win over Lytle.

"I need to get my career back on track," Hardy said. "This is the right place to do it."

Fedor loses again! Henderson?s power turns out the lights

Facing a third straight loss, Fedor Emelianenko tried some new tricks before and during his fight against Dan Henderson. But his opponent was simply better and a little more resilient in the main event of Strikeforce's event at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Just seconds away from possibly losing the fight after a Fedor barrage, Henderson kept his wits, pulled off a nifty escape and landed an uppercut that changed the fight. That one punch plopped Fedor straight down on his face where Henderson landed three more shots and referee Herb Dean chose to save the fallen former champ at 4:12 of the first round.

From 2000-08, Emelianenko was considered one of the top three mixed martial arts fighters, if not the top fighter, in the world. He reeled off 31 wins without a legitimate loss (only loss due to fight stopped because of a cut) .

But it's been a rough run recently for the former PRIDE king. He lost via shocking submission to Fabricio Werdum, was dominated by a massive heavyweight in Antonio Silva and Saturday, he was stopped via strikes for the first time in his career by the Strikeforce light heavyweight champ, who came into the fight giving away 16 pounds.

Henderson (28-8) fought 18 times in PRIDE in Japan, so he's well aware of Fedor's place in the sport.

"I've been a huge fan of Fedor forever and I respect him so much as a fighter, and what he has done for the sport," Henderson told Showtime's Gus Johnson. "For me, [this win] is a huge accomplishment compared to a lot of the things I've done in this sport."

The finish was as shocking as it was exciting, simply because it happened so quickly.

Fedor loses again! Henderson?s power turns out the lights

Henderson, 40, got off to a quick start, but Emelianenko seemed to get back into the fight when he drilled his opponent with a nice combination that backed him up. Then Fedor landed a thudding left uppercut that dropped Henderson near the cage. Emelianenko went in for the kill without securing top control. He got off three shots that grazed Henderson, but the former Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler used his grappling to grab Fedor's right knee and pull him off. Henderson immediately jumped behind him and unleashed a vicious right uppercut under Fedor's right arm. The impact was delayed for a split second and then Fedor fell flat on his face. Henderson jumped on top, landed two more rights and a left. That's when the referee arrived to save Fedor. All that in roughly nine seconds.

Fedor (31-4, 1 NC) told Johnson, he thought the fight was stopped prematurely.

"I think it was early. I don't want to say anything bad about the referee, but it seemed to me like it was early," Emelianenko said through an interpreter. "I was clearly hit, but wasn't hit flush, directly. It seems like I could've continued."

It was hard to say either way. Fedor did appear stunned as he sat up after the finish, but far from rocked.

Fedor, 34, was non-committal about his future, saying it's God's will whether he fights again. Ultimately, it probably won't be Emelianenko's choice. Emelianenko was reportedly making $1.5 million for this fight. With three straight losses, it's hard to imagine Dana White and company retaining his services.

Henderson's future is also in doubt. This was the last fight on his contract and he'd be a natural to slide back over to the UFC where he was 5-2 during two stints with the bigger promotion. Henderson left the UFC back in 2009, signing a big deal with Strikeforce. He could easily move back into the UFC's 205 or 185 division and be an immediate title contender.

War MachineAfter spending a year in jail for a felony assault conviction, the fighter formally known as Jon Koppenhaver is now back among civilized society. And that, he told Ariel Helwani on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour, is proving to be a lot tougher than he expected.

"It's weird. The first few days you get out, it's real emotional," said the fighter who legally changed his name to War Machine. "You have kind of a lot of anxiety... It's culture shock. But now that I've had time to acclimate, I feel a lot better now and I'm happy to be back in the gym."

War Machine was released from the UFC in 2008 after making controversial comments about the death of former UFC fighter Evan Tanner on his MySpace blog. He later signed with upstart promotion Bellator, but was released before he ever got a chance to debut, again for his MySpace blog comments, this time about newly-elected president Barack Obama.

After a series of run-ins with the law over physical altercations in bars, and one violent episode at porn industry party during his brief career as an adult film actor, he was sentenced to a year of incarceration in a San Diego detention facility.

Now that he's out, he said, it's been something of a struggle to adjust.

"The whole year in there, I was bored a lot, but it was never real emotional or challenging for me. But my first couple days back, it was hard. Like I cried at nighttime. It was weird. It's hard to explain. ...Now it feels like I was never really in jail, like it was all a dream. It's a trip."

Once he was released, he said, he immediately returned to the gym to resume his training. But he also took some time to reflect on the problems that his behavior had caused those close to him, such as his wife, who he married shortly before beginning his sentence.

"It was a lot of sadness and a lot of anger. Like the first night I got out...my wife was asleep and I couldn't sleep the first few days. I would always look at her sleep and I started thinking about the hard year she had. My year wasn't hard; my year was boring. She had a hard year. That made me upset to think about the hardships she went through...I felt guilty. I felt guilty for putting the people who cared about me through a lot of crap. All these emotions hit me at once and I started crying like a little girl."

While in jail, War Machine said, he occupied his time mostly with reading and trying to avoid other inmates -- a goal made easier when a mersa infection resulted in him being segregated from the rest of the prisoners.

"The first six months I was in general population and the last six months I was in the hole. To be honest, most guys, they hate the hole. It's punishment. I loved it because I didn't like living with random guys in my cell, random guys I didn't know. It was awkward and I didn't like it. The only stress I ever had in there was stress over the possibility of getting into an altercation and then getting into more trouble. So once I was in the hole, that possibility ended. It was actually a big stress relief."

The worst part of the experience, he said, was the food, which was so bad "it shouldn't even be called food." Other inmates had no interest in trying to challenge a professional fighter, he said, so the main battle was against boredom.

Even then, he said, the year in prison seemed to go by faster than the six weeks he spent filming The Ultimate Fighter.

"It's a time warp. Time isn't the same in jail. The days kind of drag, but the weeks fly by," he said.

Now that he's free, War Machine plans to return to fighting in the fall, hopefully no later than October, he said. While he still hasn't decided which organization he'll fight for, he said he certainly has suitors, adding that the U.K.-based BAMMA, which has signed other UFC castoffs like Paul Daley and Nate Marquardt, was courting him "even when I was in jail."

But rather than sign a long-term deal with one of the smaller leagues, his hope now is to get a few wins, serve out his three-year probation, and then get back in the big time.

Hopefully in the next two or three years when I'm off probation, and people see that I've changed my behavior, maybe the UFC or Bellator will give me another chance."

Tito wrecks his Rolls and cries; UFC breathes sigh of relief

It's a good thing Tito Ortiz is rich and likes to drive a $300,000 tank. The main eventer at UFC 133 got into a minor fender bender in Costa Mesa, Calif.

According to TMZ.com, Ortiz was involved in a three-car accident in his Rolls Royce. The former UFC light heavyweight champ got emotional over his smashed grill.

[Ortiz said,] "I cried a little because it's my favorite car but it will be new in no time."

Ortiz was a late fill-in at UFC 133. After Lyoto Machida asked for a bigger payday, Ortiz was seemingly the only remaining high-profile option to face Rashad Evans. Ortiz is safe and the UFC caught a huge break when he came away from this accident unscathed.
